Larson & Company Celebrates 50 Years of Serving Utah Businesses

Larson & Company will celebrate its 50th anniversary on May 1, 2025—a significant milestone that reflects five decades of delivering trusted, high-quality accounting services and laying the foundation for continued growth and success.

Founder Dennis Larson began Larson & Company with just one employee in 1975. The company now employs over 110 employees in three Utah offices, all of which grew from just one man’s vision of providing audit services to a relatively underserved industry at the time: insurance. Dennis loved the process of statutory accounting for insurance carriers and developed his skills in understanding statutory accounting while working at Peat Marwick in the early ‘70s. An entrepreneur at heart, Dennis saw a need for specialized audit services for insurance companies in Utah and knew he could be the one to provide it. Dennis worked with the Utah Insurance Department to help codify the regulations for Utah insurance companies over the years and built strong relationships with insurance departments in many surrounding states as well. Larson & Company’s reputation for attentive, specialized services has helped the firm become nationally ranked as highly as the 12th largest life insurance auditor in the nation and the 25th largest health insurance auditor in the nation by AM Best.

The firm’s success in the insurance industry gave the firm the resources to expand into other industry niches, including the captive insurance industry, where the firm is ranked the third largest service provider by Captive International, middle market companies (including manufacturers, retailers, dealerships, restaurants, private equity investors, technology, and software), tax planning and preparation, nonprofits, government entities, employee benefit plan audits, IT security audits, data analytics, and consulting.

Aside from the firm’s technical acumen, the crown jewel of Larson’s success is their employee development program called the Expectation Agreement. Each employee is required to make goals in both their personal and professional lives, and improvement in both areas is expected and encouraged. “Happy employees are better employees,” said Larson. “When an employee is doing well outside of work, they are generally more efficient, more easily coached, and more likely to take on challenges successfully.” Larson developed the program in 2002 and it has been the centerpiece of employee career paths ever since.

“When we look at the large number of partners and senior employees we have at the firm that started here as interns, it is a testament to the effectiveness of the Expectation Agreement,” said Managing Partner Greg Denning. “Our employees are so integral to the success of our firm, and we try very hard to support their success along the way with coaching and resources to help them succeed. I think this is the reason for our extremely high employee retention rate, which has been around 93% for the last decade.”

Clients love working with Larson as well and tend to stay with the firm for years. Some of Larson’s first clients are still their clients today. One of those clients is Educator’s Mutual Insurance Association, the first insurance company that Dennis Larson started working with when he started the company and paved the way for a unique industry specialization that has earned Larson & Company a reputation of one of the nation’s finest service providers to insurance entities.

The company will celebrate the anniversary with a birthday party at each office location and other special events throughout the year.
