Outsourced and Small Business Accounting Services

Get the freedom to focus on your vision.

You didn't start a business to push paper. Most companies call us because something broke. The bookkeeper left, the books are six months behind, or the bank wants financial statements and nobody can produce them. Sometimes the owner is closing the books at eleven at night. Or the company grew past what a part-time bookkeeper and a spreadsheet can handle, and it showed up when a decision got made on bad numbers.

We take over the function at the level you need. That can mean transaction processing and monthly close, a controller reviewing the work and building your reporting, or a CFO-level advisor in the room for the decisions your numbers inform. Most clients start at one level and move as the business changes.

Because Larson & Company also provides tax, audit, and advisory services, your accounting team works alongside specialists who can see how your books affect your tax position, your lender relationships, and your next big decision. Our 36 CPAs average more than 15 years of experience. We provide small business accounting services to Utah companies from offices in South Jordan, Spanish Fork, and Moab, and we serve clients nationwide through secure online portals.

Bookkeeping, Controller, or CFO Services: Which Level Do You Need?

Each level is priced separately, so you pay for the support your business actually needs.

Bookkeeping and transaction processing. Accounts payable and receivable, payroll coordination, bank and credit card reconciliations, journal entries, and monthly close. You receive accurate books and financial statements on a reliable schedule.

Controller support. Everything above, plus review and oversight of the accounting work, internal control design, chart of accounts structure, monthly reporting packages with variance analysis, and preparation for your audit or review. Most growing companies need this level, and few have it in-house.

Fractional CFO services. Everything above, plus cash flow forecasting, budgeting, KPI development, pricing and margin analysis, lender and investor reporting, and a seat in your planning conversations. Delivered on a fractional basis, typically a set number of hours each month.

Who Outsourced Accounting Fits

Growing private companies. Companies roughly between $2 million and $50 million in revenue that need a real accounting function but can't yet justify a full-time controller or CFO at market salary.

Nonprofits. Organizations managing restricted funds, grant reporting, and board-level financial presentations with a small administrative team. Fund accounting errors are one of the most common sources of audit findings, and we fix them regularly.

Dealerships. Monthly close, factory statement preparation, and department-level reporting built around the way your dealership management system organizes data.

Companies preparing for an audit or a transaction. When an audit, a sale, or an investor round is coming, your records need to hold up to scrutiny. We get them to a defensible state ahead of time. Independence rules limit the accounting work we can perform for companies we also audit, and we explain that boundary during scoping.

Companies facing a staff departure. When the person who knew the system leaves, their knowledge often leaves too. We document processes as we rebuild, so your next transition goes smoothly.

Accounting Cleanup and Catch-Up Bookkeeping

Many of our engagements start with cleanup, and messy books are a normal starting point.

We regularly take on months or years of unreconciled accounts, general ledgers with an unmaintained chart of accounts, and undeposited funds or clearing accounts holding balances nobody can explain. Other common situations include payroll recorded as a single lump entry, personal and business expenses mixed together, and prior-year balances that don't agree to the filed tax return.

We scope cleanup separately from ongoing work, with a defined endpoint. You'll know what it costs to fix the past and what it costs to run the business going forward.

Accounting Software We Work In

We work in the systems you already use, including QuickBooks Online and Desktop, Xero, Sage Intacct, NetSuite, dealership management systems, and nonprofit fund accounting platforms.

Our certified QuickBooks ProAdvisors handle setup, troubleshooting, and day-to-day questions. For clients still on QuickBooks Desktop, we manage the move to QuickBooks Online as Intuit continues to shift its customers there.

When a system change would help your business, we'll show you our reasoning. When your current system is working, we'll tell you that too.

How Your Monthly Close Works

You send, or we pull. Bank feeds, receipts, and source documents flow through a defined process. Over time, most clients send us very little.

We process and reconcile. Transactions are coded, accounts reconciled, accruals recorded, and subsidiary ledgers agreed.

We close and review. A Larson professional reviews every close before anything goes out to you.

You receive a reporting package. Financial statements plus what matters most to you: cash position, aging, department or program results, budget variance, and the two or three metrics you actually run the business on.

We meet. Monthly or quarterly, depending on your level of service. We spend that time on what the numbers mean and what to do next.

Outsourced Accounting FAQs

Group 247-1

How much does outsourced accounting cost?

It depends on transaction volume, number of accounts, complexity, and level of service. After reviewing your current records, we quote a fixed monthly fee. Cleanup is quoted separately.

Group -3

Is outsourcing cheaper than hiring an accountant?

For most companies in the range above, yes. A full-time hire brings salary, benefits, payroll taxes, software, training, turnover risk, and coverage gaps when that person is out. Outsourcing gives you a bookkeeper, a controller, and a CFO for the hours you need each one.

Group -9

Do we keep visibility and control?

Prior findings require a corrective action plan and are followed up in the current audit. Addressing them properly is what closes them.

Group -6

Can you work with our existing bookkeeper?

Often that's the best arrangement. Your bookkeeper handles daily transactions, and we provide the controller layer, review, and reporting.

Group -6

How fast can you start?

Ongoing work typically begins within two to three weeks of engagement. Cleanup timelines depend on how far behind the records are and the quality of the source documentation.

Group -6

Do you prepare our taxes too?

Yes. For many owners, business and personal finances are closely linked, so your business return and your individual return should be planned together. Our tax team works from books that are already in the shape a return needs. Tax preparation is quoted as a separate engagement.

Tell Us Where Things Stand

Behind, understaffed, or growing past what you have: all three are common starting points. Describe your situation, and we'll scope the work honestly, including any cleanup.
